A capsule endoscopy is a procedure that examines the small intestine, which is not as easily reached or observable as with typical endoscopy procedures. It is often done to find the cause of unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, to diagnose IBD or cancer, or to screen for hereditary polyps that can develop in the small intestine. The procedure requires that you swallow a small video-camera capsule, typically the size of a vitamin, which will take photos of the inside of your small intestine as it passes through the various parts of your gastrointestinal tract. The images taken by the capsule are transmitted to the SensorArray, a data-recorder that will likely be strapped to your abdomen or waist, which will save the thousands of images the camera takes. The swallowed M2A Capsule is disposable and will be excreted naturally in your bowel movement. In the rare case that it does not excrete naturally, it will need to be removed endoscopically or surgically.

Preparing for your Capsule Endoscopy

You will need to consult with your physician about any prior medical conditions or history to make sure that you can safely follow the generally recommended steps. The day before the Capsule Endoscopy, you will likely be recommended to do a clear liquid diet along with taking a laxative solution. The evening before the Capsule Endoscopy, be prepared to not eat or drink except for necessary medications with a sip of water, and do not take any medications 2 hours before undergoing the endoscopy. For more detailed instructions, you will need to consult your physician or visit our Procedure Preparation list.

What to expect during your Capsule Endoscopy

Upon arrival to your appointment, you will likely be fitted with the SensorArray with adhesive pads and connected to the DataRecorder around your waist. You will ingest the M2A Capsule and will be asked to not eat or drink for at least 2 hours. After 4 hours you may have a light snack. After the examination is completed, you may return to your normal diet. The above instructions related to eating apply, unless your physician specifies otherwise. Capsule Endoscopy typically lasts about 8 hours; during this time, do not remove the belt or engage in strenuous physical activity. As mentioned above, the M2A Capsule is disposable and will most likely be excreted naturally in your bowel movement with little risk.
