What Are Quality Indicators?
Quality indicators are objective, data-driven metrics used to assess colonoscopy performance. These benchmarks are not just technical standards — they're directly linked to patient outcomes, such as cancer prevention and early detection.
Two of the most important quality indicators are:
1. Average Withdrawal Time
What It Measures:
The time it takes to withdraw the colonoscope from the cecum to the rectum — during which the physician inspects the colon lining.
Why It Matters:
- The longer the withdrawal time (within reason), the more thoroughly the physician can detect polyps or precancerous lesions.
- A withdrawal time of at least 6 minutes is associated with significantly better detection rates.
Our Performance:
GI Consultants' average withdrawal time is 10 minutes, exceeding the 2024 national benchmark by a wide margin.

2. Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR)
What It Measures:
The percentage of colonoscopies in which at least one adenoma (a precancerous polyp) is found.
Why It Matters:
- ADR is the single most important quality metric for colonoscopy.
- For every 1% increase in ADR, there's a 3% drop in colorectal cancer incidence and a 5% reduction in cancer-related deaths.
Our Performance:
Our team has achieved an ADR of 45.3%, far exceeding the national target of 25%.
