A Burning Sensation Caused by Stomach Acid Moving Up the Esophagus
Heartburn is a painful burning sensation that typically occurs beneath the breastbone. It's most noticeable after eating, bending over, or lying down. Acid reflux is the regurgitation of stomach acid into the esophagus, which often causes heartburn. These symptoms can occur independently or as part of a chronic condition like GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease).
What Causes Heartburn and Reflux?
The most common cause is a weakened or abnormal lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the muscle that separates the esophagus from the stomach. When this muscle doesn't close properly, acid can back up into the esophagus, causing discomfort and damage.
Common dietary and lifestyle triggers include:
- Alcohol
- Tomato-based products
- Chocolate
- Coffee and soda
- Fried or fatty foods
- Onions, peppermint, vinegar
- Spicy or acidic foods
- Smoking
- Being overweight or pregnant
Advanced Testing to Pinpoint Your Cause and Guide Treatment
Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
Allows direct visualization of the esophagus and stomach to check for inflammation, ulcers, or signs of GERD.
High-Resolution Esophageal Manometry
Measures pressure and muscle function in the esophagus—ideal for patients with swallowing problems or suspected motility disorders.
Esophageal pH Monitoring
Assesses how often acid enters the esophagus, confirming whether reflux is present and to what degree.
Capsule Endoscopy (GIVEN System)
A small capsule records images of the digestive tract to detect abnormalities without the need for a traditional scope.
